Netherlands Launches National AI Strategy with €2.5 Billion Investment
The Dutch government unveils a comprehensive national AI strategy committing €2.5 billion over five years, focusing on AI in healthcare, agriculture, and water management—sectors where the Netherlands has global expertise.
The Netherlands has unveiled its National AI Strategy 2025-2030, committing €2.5 billion in public investment over five years to position the country as a European leader in responsible AI development and deployment. The strategy was developed in consultation with industry, academia, and civil society organizations.
The strategy focuses on three priority sectors where the Netherlands has established international expertise: healthcare (AI-assisted diagnostics and drug discovery), precision agriculture (AI-optimized crop management and sustainability), and water management (AI-enhanced flood prediction and infrastructure monitoring).
The plan also includes significant investments in AI education and workforce development, with targets to train 50,000 AI professionals by 2028 and integrate AI literacy into secondary school curricula. The government will establish five national AI research centers in partnership with Dutch universities.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte emphasized the strategy's dual focus on innovation and governance: "We want to lead in AI not just through technical excellence, but by demonstrating that AI can be developed and deployed in ways that respect fundamental rights and democratic values." The strategy explicitly references the EU AI Act as a framework for responsible deployment.
