More students in these majors are switching due to AI: poll
Data: Lumina Foundation-Gallup; Note: Due to rounding, percentages may sum to 100% ±1 percentage point; Chart: Avery Lotz/Axios Nearly half of college students say they've thought at least a fair amount about changing their major or studies because of AI's potential impact , according to newly released polling. The big picture: College graduates are entering a job market that's been rocked by a massive tech evolution , reshaping career prospects for entry-level workers. And as the new survey from Lumina Foundation and Gallup notes, AI isn't just impacting how academics study — it's also determining the studies they pursue. By the numbers: Among currently enrolled college students, 14% have thought "a great deal" and 33% have thought "a fair amount" about changing their major or field of st

Car Dependency in Urban Accessibility
arXiv:2604.01019v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: To achieve net-zero emissions, cities must transition away from reliance on private vehicles. However, car-centric urban growth has transformed the automobile from a convenience tool into a necessity for accessing essential services, creating significant "car dependency". This study introduces a novel Car Dependency Index (CDI) that quantifies the accessibility gap between private and public transport across 18 cities in Europe and North America. Utilising high-resolution geospatial data and numerical simulations, we reveal pronounced spatial inequalities, showing that car dependency remains a primary driver of car ownership even when accounting for income. A ``what-if" simulation of the planned metro expansion in Rome predicts a reduction
Price of Anarchy of Algorithmic Monoculture
arXiv:2604.00444v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Several recent works investigate the effects of monoculture, the ever increasing phenomenon of (possibly) self-interested actors in a society relying on one common source of advice for decision making, with an archetypal driving example being the growing adoption and predictive power of machine learning models in matching markets, e.g. in hiring. Kleinberg and Raghavan (PNAS, 2021) introduced a model that captures the effects of monoculture in a one-sided matching market with advice, demonstrating that a higher accuracy common signal (such as an algorithmic vendor) might incentivize society as a whole to rationally adopt it, but as a collective it would be better off if each instead adopted less accurate, but private advice. We generalize the
