ELLIS Institute Tübingen joins CLS as Associated Partner

It’s official: The ELLIS Institute Tübingen is now an Associated Partner of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems (CLS)!

Inaugurated ten years ago by the Presidents of ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Society, the goal of CLS is to advance artificial intelligence through cross-institutional exchange between ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Society, primarily the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS). The participating institutions believe that strong academic cooperation in Europe is vital in order to actively shape developments in modern AI. Currently, 64 faculty members are engaged at CLS: 38 professors from ETH Zurich, 23 directors and group leaders from MPI-IS, including several who are already co-affiliated with the ELLIS Institute Tübingen, as well as three CLS Senior Fellows.

At the heart of CLS is its doctoral fellowship program. PhD students benefit from joint supervision by ETH professors and MPI directors and group leaders, ultimately earning their doctoral degree from ETH Zurich. 40 young researchers currently follow this path towards their doctorate. With these unique opportunities, CLS gives young academics in the field of learning systems the chance to engage in exceptional collaborations and exchanges early in their careers, as part of a distinguished PhD program.

Now, the ELLIS Institute Tübingen joins the activities of CLS as an Associated Partner. This arrangement offers Principal Investigators at the Institute the possibility to join the faculty of CLS, benefit from the strong network, and supervise - in conjunction with a faculty professor at ETH Zurich - within the CLS doctoral program. This step will be advantageous for both the German and Swiss sides, increasing the range of possible topics and potential co-advising combinations. The result is an ever stronger magnet for the brightest minds in learning systems research and a firm anchor point for wider European-level developments.
